Tales of Trial and Terror: Displaying My Green Underbelly-- Playing Hairdresser

A few weeks ago, my friend & neighbor has entrusted and charged me with two vintage photo shoots of her including styling and make up. I've discovered I have quite a knack for hairstyling on another person. On myself? Ehhh... not so much. Out of respect, I won't be exhibiting the photos on my blog, but let me just say that she looked absolutely stunning.

Anyway, we went to the local dollar store recently, and bought a few odds and ends for future shoots.
I decided to use some of those on myself, in an attempt to do something with my hair...

The Equipment

The sponge curlers, sectional clips, and pin curl clips are the newest doodads.

The Setup

I went with a dry set; shooting for the most difficult path for my own hair... go figure. I am always choosing the path fraught with peril.
The setting stage actually looked cute, so why not do some domestic-pin-up inspired pose?

The Result...

Less than successful, I ended up with these crusty lop-sided curls that triumphantly displayed how absolutely green I really am with stylizing myself. It started hissing once I busted out the brush...
As all of you as my witness', I will eventually learn to tame my own locks!

Who will win this battle of wits?! Stay tuned till the next episode of...
Tales of Trial and Terror!

  1. Well, I like it! But then I can't do anything more difficult than a braid or a ponytail, so it impresses the heck out of me! :D

    1. Heh, I want to graduate from doing the same things too!
But I can only seem to do it on others...

  2. I don't know what look you were going for, but I like what you ended up with. :) I don't see a bit of crust! ;)

    1. It's much more noticeable in person, heh-- but thank you =D

  3. I have worn my hair short most of my life, but I stopped cutting it about two years ago and it now halfway down my back. So I am just now learning how to style it. I was ridiculously proud of myself when I could successfully put a bun in my hair. I've been trying to learn how to do a French twist, but it hasn't worked out yet. :/ So I empathize and wish you luck!

    1. Haha, sounds like the same reaction when I first learned how to put up my bun with just sticks-- I totally felt pro =P

  4. Well, I think you look lovely with those curls. ^^

I can't do much with my hair either, it's either loose, or I put it into a ponytail...The most creative thing I can do with it is roll the pony tail into a bun and that's about it. Or I braid it, but I can't even do a french braid...whenever I try to do something more with my hair, I usually spend a hour or even more time in from of the mirror and keep failing until my hair is all greesy anf flat from all the messing....so...don't worry, you are on the right track, even if you don't know it yourself yet...! ;)

    1. Sounds about right with me as well! >.<
The reason I am very disappointed with these curls is because they're exactly the type of random curls I get when I don't bother using a leave-in. I was shooting for more uniform curls.

  5. I love your thumbs-down-sneer-of disgust :)

  6. When my hair was long, I gave up and resorted to hairpieces to make it look decent. I have a drawer full of additions. I must say, it's a lot easier when going out- just put your hair on, leave, come home, take it off, go to bed.

    1. That's so very true... but my hair, despite what it may appear, is very slick. No hair pieces stay in unless it's a headband type of accessory, heh.

  7. Oh I agree I really like how the curls turned out, very natural. :)

    1. A little too natural, I may say XD
They resemble my natural curls when I don't bother using a leave-in conditioner/frizz control, haha.

  8. I think it looks great. but if it is vintage styled curles you are aiming for I would suggest that you put the rolls in an horizontal angle and start with the roll under the hair.

    1. Thanks!
I followed a tut on youtube, but I came to understand it's only for people with about shoulder length hair =/
I think the main problem was that this was a dry set, so the hairspray wasn't able to reach some parts of my hair, thus resulting in very sporadic curls.

  9. The end result looks fabulous in the photo! Of course, that's not real life but at least you got a cute picture out of it. ;) And the setting stage did indeed look adorable.

I'm terrible at doing curlers but I've found pin curls are quick, easy, and actually somewhat stay curled once I remove them. No small accomplishment for my hair. :)

    1. Thanks! Though, since the quality of photos my camera produces is on the bad side, you're not really able to get a good look at all the bad details XD... I guess that's something to be grateful for, right? Hehe.

I don't have a curling iron to make quick work of pin curls, and my hair, as it seems, is not very receptive to hair sprays and gels-- d'oh. But I'll keep trying, darnit!

  10. I don't get it... Why are you calling it unsuccessful?
You have very pretty hair on the last picture! Thick, healthy and wavy, love it. :)
After washing my hair, I usually put it up in a ponytail, and braid it for night, so it'll have some texture in the morning. This is all I'm capable of.

    1. Heh, it only looks that way on one side on the bottom of it-- but the other side is deflated-- meanwhile the entire top was crusted stiff
I was hoping for bouncier even curls. >.<

Your method is usually what I do as well for everyday.
