Skeleton Closet: A Fundamental Approach

I never thought I'd live to hear myself say the words "I don't know what to wear".  I've been wanting to make an outfit post for a few days but feeling less than inspired by my current wardrobe (eek!), I find myself uttering that awful phrase!

I've never had to wear a uniform in my life, so I never understood when some have claimed that it hinders the desire to dress up prettily on a daily basis... well, my current job requires one and I find myself relating to that notion as well. Even moreso I am finding it less inspiring to simply do my make up!

Today, I went back to the basics of goth-- lace, long skirts and dark lipstick! With a little skull cameo to boot. This top came at me via my mother's most wonderful care packages; it is one of my old tops that for some wildly unknown reason I never wore either. She sent it along in case I wanted to revamp it (I love my momma so very much). I guess it could use some taking in, but with a waist belt, it's just dandy.

If you ever find yourself in a rut, well it doesn't hurt to go back to the fundamentals-- it can be just as refreshing as the new and shiny!

Off topic: I can't believe how big my beautiful fur baby has grown! He's such a treasure; his company has been an integral part of my recovery process.

6 months old! Doesn't fit in any of the below!
4 months old (fit comfortably inside a candy bucket)
5 weeks old (easily fit inside a teacup)

...I'm a sap, no two ways around it...

What I am wearing:
  • Top: old top, likely thrifted
  • Skirt: Sirens
  • Waist Belt: Fairweather
  • Necklace: Self-made

  1. Aw .... Fur baby! :) For me, the Catholic school uniform of my youth made me hate sameness. In subcultures, especially goth, dressing differently becomes dressing like everyone else quite quickly because we tend to go for the same aesthetics. I have a deep respect for people who look different in a sea of difference ... Like Meagan or Natalie or Michele. Uniforms are a dangerous thing - they stifle creativity and individualism. They are comfortable because we don't need to think outside the box, which claims to be outside the box. ;)

    1. And PS, that rant wasn't directed at you. Oy. This is a topic I've been really thinking about lately - uniforms and such. You look quite pretty, my dear.

    2. Thank you! =)

I've always feared the same when it came to goth fashion; there's just so much redundancy, and I admit that there are days (like today) when it just feels good to wiggle my way into something mostly "one size fits all" hehe. The repetition is largely why I choose to sew/make and thrift all of my clothing and accessories.
I feel like if I can keep up what I have been doing, than I won't be able to consider myself "bland", let alone what others think haha.

    3. So true: sewing and creating your own stuff keeps it real ... especially when we can get our hands on great Halloween patterned fabric or some fancy stuff for cheap-cheap. :)

    4. I've never had to wear a uniform, but to be honest sometimes it would be easier - you just have to be more creative to rock it! Hmm, sounds like a challenge!! ;)

    5. Michelle ... you'd rock anything you put on your body! :)

    6. I wish I could be creative with my uniform, but it's a fast food uni (blah)-- hair has to be up and in the hat they give you, make up neutral to none, no-slip sneakers, and the only permissible jewelry is a wedding band.

I have been wearing my halloween socks! Not that people can really notice my feet while I'm behind the counter, hehe. I have been toying with the idea of dying my hair purple, but when I asked them if that's allowed they told me I'd likely be told to wear a wig =/ ... highlights are ok, though!

  3. First things first: oooo, kitteh <3 <3 <3

Got to thinking about uniforms... I've never had to wear one (luckily), but the older I get, and the more creative I have to be, the more I sorta resort to one. Lately, I've found that wearing one or two basic outfits frees the mind to concentrate on other things in need of a creative spark.

Strange how people react so differently to such things. Usually the creative sort hates uniforms, rebels against them. But I kinda see them liberating. As long as you're not forced into one.

    1. I think some uniforms are more workable than others, the ones that are the most restricting are the ones I think people get most grumpy about-- this is how I feel about fast food unis, hehe. I get my creative spark by looking my best, and it usually pyramids like that into the rest of my life, but I can see how a uniform can be liberating sometimes.

  5. Sometimes I put on old clothes and find them surprisingly "new" too XD also, now I can reinvent new ways to wear them. My tastes haven't changed that much during the years, the only thing that's changed is my ability to match my clothes in a creative way :D

    1. Oh I wish I had all of my old clothes with me!
Part of the reason my wardrobe is boring me is that I've worn everything more than twice already =/
I'm one of those people that NEEDS a huge wardrobe of clothing lol

    2. Me too. And then I see all those fashion bloggers who apparently have a pair of shoes for each day of the year and I'm like, HOW? XD

  6. I love your clothes! Lace and long skirts are some of my favourite things! Totally jealous of that outfit!

I guess I have a pretty big wardrobe, but I tend to wear a lot of the best things over and over. And I long for more Victorian and Regency style gowns. I need elegance!

I have to just say: I don't think I've ever seen anyone look so good in black lipstick!

    1. Thank you, that's very sweet of you to say =)
The lipstick is wet n' wild called Vamp It Up, in person it's more of a dark purple but it shows up black because my camera is horrid at picking up purples lol

  8. My cat stopped growing when he was about 6 months old, and he still first into an ice cream box...everyone keeps thinking he's still a kitten, while he's a year and 5 months old already...^^

Anyway...I've never had to wear any unifroms in mt life either, but I can easily get stuck in a rut. Also, I tend to wear my favorite clothes all the time and after a while, when I get bored of them, I feel like I'm so grey and boring and I have nothing to wear...:)

    1. Aww, small grown up cats are the most adorable!
I hoped Poe would stop growing around 4 months, but he's getting to be such a beefy guy! I really love big cats too, though.

I have a few favorite pieces, but I somehow managed to work new outfits everyday. This wardrobe rut is definitely a new sensation to me lol

  9. I love that lipstick! Oh my,what a big boy he has become! He's going to be a big guy if he's only 6 months right now!

    1. It's one of two favorite lip shades now, right next to Cherry Bomb-- also by Wet n Wild. They're so inexpensive too, and last a very long time.

I hope he grows to be as big as my husbands former cat, I love big and small cats, so the fact he's growing like a bean stalk is so thrilling!
